LOW BUDGET DIY BACKYARD WEDDING DECORATIONS & IDEAS

I’ve recently seen a huge rise in the popularity of backyard weddings. It’s certainly no coincidence that I’ve recently had the chance to shoot three gorgeous back garden celebrations! They all took full advantage of their very own backyards by incorporating super pretty, low budget DIY backyard wedding decorations.

Being a photographer for DIY backyard weddings means that I get to capture all the interesting, one-of-a-kind ideas that my couples bring to life for their special day, and I absolutely love it!

So, if you’re planning to have a backyard wedding and are looking for some creative inspiration for DIY wedding decoration, you’re in the right place! I’ll be introducing you to Liana & Dan, Dorrie & Ben, and Ash & Rolf, who all did an incredible job at being creative and making their backyard wedding super special to them.

Making DIY wedding decorations may sound intimidating at first, but if you’re a creative person, it’s one of the best ways to express your personality on your wedding day!

Low budget DIY backyard wedding decoration tip no.1 : Plant loads of flowers & use them for flower baskets

Liana and Dan got married in Summer 2020 in Liana’s mum’s backyard. Liana knew that she wanted to get married there as soon as her mum purchased the property. It had this amazing, peaceful atmosphere, and she knew it would be just perfect for her special day.

While being engaged for almost 2 years, they finished up the backyard from scratch. Planting lots of flowers that bloomed in February, taking great care of the lawn, but most importantly… they made flower baskets and even dried rose petals from the garden for the bridesmaids to throw, which was such a nice touch.

Liana and Dan also had so many more fun ideas, from smoke bombs to sparklers, they had it all!

Their wedding theme was “rustic with a bit of bling and glam”.  You can see the pampas grass incorporated throughout the wedding decoration & bouquets, and we obviously can’t ignore the couple portraits with Liana’s horses and puppy! One of the many pros to a backyard wedding is celebrating with your fur babies.

Low budget DIY backyard wedding decoration tip no.2 : Make your own wedding signs

Dorrie and Ben live in a beautiful part of the U.K. I’d never visited before - The Peak District! It was such an amazing experience to explore and see this beautiful part of the country.

Their wedding was so lively, had lots of warm colours, and it gave off the perfect festival vibe. Dorrie had eight bridesmaids, so we had a great girl gang to have photos with. Not to mention the funniest best man ever, who kissed the groom during the bridal party shoot - hilarious! In the evening, Dorrie changed into a short sequined colourful dress to dance the night away in.

Dorrie and Ben both work in production, so there was no doubt that they were going to use their creative minds to make all sorts of DIY wedding decorations. They created so many amazing signs and decorations for the wedding that made it super unique to them. You can see the windmill and signage in the pictures below. See how it adds such a personal touch to their festival DIY wedding?

Low budget DIY backyard wedding decoration tip no.3 : Hand dry flowers, and transform your garage into a night club

Ash and Rolf’s wedding was super fun, colourful, and entirely DIY! Ash is one of my oldest friends, so it was magical watching her get married.

My favourite thing from their wedding has to be the hand dried hydrangeas that Ash made in different shades of blue. It was used for bouquets, table decorations, and the handmade arch for their ceremony, which kept everything cohesive and tied it all together so perfectly. For the natural-boho style arch, she also used toitoi, branches, and tree leaves in addition to the hydrangeas. I still can’t believe that this is handmade because of how pretty it looks (I’m most definitely going to ask her & pay her to make one for my wedding hehe)!

Ash and Rolf had their first dance on the front lawn under the festoon lights, which they sourced and hung themselves. On the balcony, there was a band playing their favourite songs, which only added to the warm, cosy atmosphere.

For the reception party, they transformed their garage into nightclub with laser lights, boom box, and even a smoke machine. Here’s a quote from one of the wedding guests to prove how amazing it turned out… “I would pay to get into this club!!!”

If you absolutely love parting until early hours in the morning, having a DIY back garden wedding will allow you to do exactly that with your reception party.

Altogether, it was just unreal to see such a large wedding come together being solely DIY.
